    • 01Google Business Profile beats everything else: for a local Australian business it is the single highest return hour you will spend, and it is free.
    • 02One page per service, always: a single services page listing eight things will lose to eight competitors who each wrote a proper page about one thing.
    • 03Expect four to six months before real movement: anyone promising page one in 30 days is either lying or targeting search terms nobody types.

Most SEO advice aimed at Australian small businesses is written to sell a retainer, or copied from an American blog that assumes you have a content team. This is what I tell clients who ask what to do themselves. An owner with five hours a month can do most of it. The parts worth paying for are at the end, with how to spot an agency taking you for a ride.

What SEO can and cannot do for you

It puts you in front of people already looking for what you sell, in the suburbs you serve, at a cost per lead that beats paid advertising. For a service business that is often the most profitable channel you will build, because traffic keeps arriving after you stop paying.

It cannot create demand that does not exist, fix a business with no reviews and a phone nobody answers, or beat a fifteen year old competitor with 400 reviews inside a quarter. And it will not sell a product people do not want; it will just show more people something they decline.

It is slower than everyone expects and faster than everyone fears. Map results can shift in two to six weeks. Organic rankings take four to six months, and nine to twelve in competitive categories such as legal, dental and trades in inner Melbourne or Sydney.

    Keyword research with free tools

You do not need a paid subscription. You need forty minutes and a spreadsheet.

    • Google autocomplete. Type your service and pause, then add in, near, cost, best, and each of your suburbs. Write down every suggestion.
    • People also ask. Expand every box on a results page. Real questions with real volume, and they make excellent headings.
    • Bing Webmaster Tools. Free keyword volume data without a credit card. Lower than Google, but the pattern holds.
    • Google Keyword Planner. Free with a Google Ads account. Wide ranges unless you are spending, but enough to separate 1,000 searches from 10.
    • Search Console. Its Performance report shows what you already rank for at positions 5 to 20. The fastest work available to you.
    • Your inbox and phone. The words customers use to enquire are the words they typed to find you.

Sort them into three buckets. Money terms, service plus location, such as emergency plumber Brunswick. Research terms, the questions asked before buying, such as how much does rewiring a house cost. Brand terms, your name. Money terms get service pages, research terms get articles.

Ignore volume snobbery. A term with 70 local searches a month, where six of those people are ready to book, beats a national term with 8,000 searches you will never rank for.

Google Business Profile: the biggest single lever

If you serve customers locally and only do one thing from this article, do this. The map pack sits above organic results and takes an enormous share of clicks. It is free, and most competitors have half filled theirs in. Do it properly:

    • Verify the listing. Nothing works until you do.
    • Choose the most specific primary category, then add secondaries. This moves rankings more than anything else in the profile.
    • Name, address and phone must match your site and other listings exactly, including whether you write Street or St.
    • If you visit customers, set it as a service area business and hide the address. Never fake an address. Google removes listings for that.
    • Add every service with a real description, and products if you sell them.
    • Upload twenty genuine photos: your van, your team, completed work, the shopfront. Stock imagery does nothing.
    • Opening hours including public holidays, kept accurate.
    • Answer the Q and A section yourself. You may ask and answer your own.
    • Post monthly. A modest signal, but it keeps the profile alive.

Then do Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Ten minutes each, and Apple Maps matters more than people think.

Reviews, and how to ask without being annoying

Review count and recency affect map rankings, and affect whether someone rings you far more. A business with 12 reviews at 4.9 loses to one with 180 at 4.6 in most people's heads.

What works: ask in person while the customer is happiest, then text the review link from your Business Profile dashboard within the hour. Not an email. A text. Ask everyone, every time, and about one in four will do it.

What gets you penalised: buying reviews, offering discounts, or asking only the happy ones. A single removal event undoes two years of work. Reply to every review, including the bad ones, calmly and briefly. Prospective customers read the reply more carefully than the complaint.

On page basics that still matter

    Unglamorous, and it works:

    • Title tag: 55 to 60 characters, service first, location second, business name last. Every page gets its own.
    • Meta description: 150 characters written as an advertisement. It does not affect ranking, only whether anyone clicks.
    • One H1 per page, describing the page in human words.
    • H2 headings matching real questions, taken from your People also ask research.
    • Internal links from articles to service pages with descriptive anchor text. The most underused tactic in small business SEO.
    • Descriptive image file names and alt text. Compress before upload.
    • Phone and address in the footer as text, not inside an image.

Skip keyword density and advice about repeating your term a set number of times. That has not been how ranking works for over a decade.

Small business team reviewing website performance together

One page per service, and why the list page loses

Almost every site we audit has a page called Services with eight short paragraphs on it. It is trying to rank for eight searches and does a mediocre job of all of them.

Split it. Each service gets 600 to 1,200 words: what it is, who it suits, what is included, how pricing works, how long it takes, common questions, a clear next step. Now each page ranks for its own term.

A plumber with separate pages for blocked drains, hot water repairs, gas fitting and leak detection outranks one with a single services page nearly every time. The work is a weekend. The effect lasts years.

Suburb pages done properly, not as doorway pages

Location pages work. Bad ones get ignored or penalised, and Google has been explicit about doorway pages.

    Doorway page Proper location page
Same 300 words with the suburb swappedWritten fresh for each area you work in
40 suburbs published in one afternoonFour to eight suburbs with real jobs and photos
No specifics beyond the place nameStreets, landmarks, housing stock, council rules
No proof you have been thereCase studies, before and after photos, local reviews
Generic call to actionTravel time, callout fee, availability

A practical test: if you could swap the suburb name and the page still reads correctly, it is a doorway page. Write four excellent ones instead of thirty empty ones.

    Technical basics, kept simple

You do not need a technical audit. You need five things confirmed.

    It is indexed

Search site: followed by your domain. If pages are missing, check the Pages report in Search Console for reasons.

    It loads fast

Run PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Under 2.5 seconds for the largest element. Oversized images cause most failures.

    It works on a phone

Most of your traffic is mobile. Test the contact form and phone link on a real handset, not a narrow browser window.

It has HTTPS and one address

Certificate installed, and every domain variation redirecting to one canonical version. Duplicates split your signals.

The fifth is Search Console. Verify it, submit a sitemap, check it monthly. It is the only place Google tells you directly what it thinks of your site.

    Content that earns links

Posts about five tips for choosing a plumber earn nothing. Nobody links to them and nobody reads them.

What earns links from Australian sites: real pricing with actual figures and the year attached. Local data nobody else has published, such as what you charged across 200 jobs by suburb. Guides to Australian rules, like state compliance requirements or rental minimum standards. Simple calculators. Original local photography, offered freely.

Then tell someone it exists: local news outlets, industry associations, suppliers whose products you install, the chamber of commerce. Ten relevant Australian links beat 500 directory submissions, which are worthless.

What to do yourself and what to pay for

Do yourself: the Business Profile, review requests, photos, answering questions, and the raw material for content. Nobody knows your jobs, pricing or customer objections better than you, and an agency writing without that produces the vague content you see everywhere.

Pay for: technical fixes, page structure, editing your raw material into pages that convert, link outreach, and analytics setup so you know what produces enquiries. If the site itself is the bottleneck, fixing that beats any retainer, which is why our five page business websites start at AUD 399 plus GST.

Budgets. Doing it yourself costs five to eight hours a month. A freelancer runs AUD 500 to 1,000 a month plus GST. Small agencies sit around AUD 299 to 1,500 plus GST, and our local SEO is AUD 299 per month plus GST. Above AUD 3,000 expect a named strategist, a content plan and reporting tied to enquiries. At AUD 199 you are buying an automated report.

One honest note. If you need customers this month, SEO is the wrong tool. Run Google Ads for immediate flow and build SEO underneath so you can spend less on ads later. Full figures are on our pricing page.

How to tell if an SEO agency is lying to you

    • They guarantee number one rankings. Nobody controls Google's results. This alone should end the meeting.
    • They claim a special relationship with Google. No such thing exists for organic results.
    • Reports show only rankings, never enquiries or revenue. Rankings for terms nobody searches are easy to win and worth nothing.
    • You do not own your Search Console, Analytics or Business Profile logins. If leaving means losing your data, that is deliberate.
    • They cannot name one specific thing they did last month. Ask for URLs published and links acquired.
    • They talk about submitting your site to hundreds of directories. That stopped being useful around 2012.
    • Twelve month lock in with no exit clause before any results. Three months is reasonable; twelve is a trap.
    • They cannot say what your competitors are doing differently. If they have not looked, they are not doing strategy.

Two questions for any provider. What will you do in month one, specifically. And what would make you tell me to stop paying you. An honest operator answers both. If you would rather hand the content side over, that is what our content marketing work is built around.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long before SEO works for a small Australian business?

Business Profile improvements can show in map results within two to six weeks. Organic rankings take four to six months to move meaningfully, and nine to twelve in competitive categories such as legal, dental or trades in major metro areas.

Can I do SEO myself without any tools?

Yes, for the highest value work. Search Console, Google Business Profile, Bing Webmaster Tools, Keyword Planner and PageSpeed Insights are free and cover most of what a small business needs. Paid tools help with competitor research but are not why sites rank.

How much should a small business spend on SEO in Australia?

A freelancer typically charges AUD 500 to 1,000 a month plus GST. Small agencies range from about AUD 299 to 1,500 plus GST depending on scope. Above AUD 3,000, expect a named strategist, a documented content plan and reporting on enquiries rather than rankings.

Should I build a page for every suburb I service?

No. Build pages only for areas where you genuinely work and can show local proof: photos, case studies, reviews. Pages with only the suburb name changed are doorway pages, and Google either ignores them or acts against them.

Do reviews affect my Google rankings?

Review quantity, recency and rating influence map rankings, and strongly influence whether someone contacts you. Ask every customer by text on the day of service. Never buy reviews or offer incentives, because removals wipe out years of trust.

Is SEO better than Google Ads for a small business?

Different problems. Ads deliver enquiries this week at a cost that never stops. SEO takes months but keeps working after you stop paying. If you need customers now, start with ads and build SEO alongside so you can cut ad spend later.
